Suffering with emotion-driven overeating can feel confusing, desperate and lonely. At Eating Matters, we offer you the chance to find support and explore your issues in a safe, non-judgemental space.

We run small group workshops throughout the year to help you understand why you eat the way you do.  We look at some of the issues underlying overeating such as low self-esteem, difficulty expressing feelings and problems asserting personal boundaries. We also explore why dieting doesn’t work and ways to eat calmly and naturally.

The groups are facilitated by Julie de Rohan, an experienced psychotherapist in the field of emotion-driven overeating.  Julie’s aim is to provide a safe place in which group members can share their experiences and better understand their individual  difficulties with food and weight. The workshops are co-facilitated by counsellor-in-training Gary Bicker. You can read Julie’s blog here.

Please note that these workshops are intended for people with overeating issues who do not use compensatory behaviour such as vomiting, using laxatives or over-exercising. Therefore, they are not suitable for people suffering with bulimia – we provide one-to-one counselling for this issue.

We currently have free places available on our 2018 workshops, funded by Healthy Norwich – Health & Wellbeing Innovation Grants, for people living in NR1 to NR8 areas of Norwich who are registered with their local GP surgery.  Contact us to find out if you’re eligible but please note if the workshops are unsuitable for you, this funding does not cover one-to-one counselling.

What happens next

If you’re interested in taking part in the workshops, you will be invited to come in and have a chat with Julie. This provides an opportunity to talk through your overeating issues, ask any questions you might have and to determine if the workshops are suitable for your needs.

In some cases you may be offered one-to-one counselling instead of group workshops.

“It has been an enlightening experience, a journey that I wish I had taken years ago. A new way of thinking about food and myself – it has been extremely empowering.”

“I cannot praise Julie enough, she was informative in her subject and always had empathy, understanding and wonderful listening skills and positivity.”

“I have discovered things about myself I never knew were there.  I believe in myself for the first time in my life and I’ve made some wonderful friends.”

“I would recommend the workshops to others and hope they get as much out of it as I have. Totally worthwhile and a great place to meet other like-minded, amazing people.”
